STUDIO 1

Our live room is a versatile and multi-faceted space, with numerous dividers, panels and baffles to tailor the room to any ensemble or setup. The space is particularly popular for live band recording, yet initimate enough to feel cosy for vocal recording sessions. The studio is particularly popular for jazz recording, rock bands and string ensembles: our video page shows the broad range of genres that artists bring here. The photos on this page illustrate a few of the setup possibilities. We offer recording services by the day or by the hour, so get in touch to discuss your next project.

Why do you need a recording studio in the 2020s?

The dizzying pace of technology begs this question, and it’s true that more records than ever are being made from bedrooms and sheds around the world. The quality of any recording is limited by a number of factors, often acting in the following order of importance

  1. Musical idea

  2. Musician

  3. Instrument

  4. Room

  5. Microphone

  6. Pre-amplifier

  7. Recording Medium

Home recording technology has dramatically improved the latter factors in recent years, particularly 6 & 7, but for many types of recording the sound of the room that the musicians are in remains crucial. At Lightship 95 we are fortunate to work in one of the best-sounding rooms of it’s size anywhere in the world. Naturally, the environment you work in influences a recording project in many ways outside of it’s purely acoustic properties, and the Lightship has been redesigned from the hull up to create a space to relax and focus on your creative project.
